Power Steering Service and Repair

Every time you turn the steering wheel in your car, your power steering mechanism (made up of a hand full of components) transmits hundreds of pounds of power in order to turn the wheels in the direction of your choice. This massive power generation generates a lot of heat, and leads to the break down of the power steering fluid (a hydraulic fluid). Power steering fluid is cheap and easy to replace, but if you let it get contaminated, it can lead to the break down of more expensive parts like the power steering rack (estimated repair ~$1000) or power steering pump.

A power steering fluid flush is recommended every 2 years or 30,000 miles. The process involves  draining the contaminated fluid, vacuuming the tubes and applying fresh fluid. In between flushes, you should be checking fluid levels, inspecting for leaks under the car and also listening to see if there are undesirable noises while turning.
