A front end alignment is a service that is constantly put off and shunned by consumers when it's value is one of the highest of any maintenance procedure. There are two ways to tell if your car needs an alignment:
1) Your tires have differing degrees of tread wear which you can determine by doing a visual inspection of the tires. The two front tires, assuming they were installed at the same point in time should have the same tread depth. If not you likely need an alignment.
2) Your car "pulls" or tugs to one side when you release the wheel, preventing the car from going naturally straight. In an empty parking lot, drive slowly and release the steering wheel. If the car yanks to one side within the first few seconds, an alignment is necessary. There is a difference between a slow drift to one side or a quick pull so take note.
Having a misaligned front end can cause major damage to the tires, brakes, bearings, bushings and more. It can also be extremely dangerous to the car's passengers and any other cars/pedestrians in your immediate driving space.
