Cooling System Repair

A vehicle's engine would fail to work, and actually melt if not for the cooling system. The cooling system is an intricate set of parts that keeps things under the hood cool and effective. The three components are the:

1) Pumps
2) Piping
3) Temperature Control

The water pump helps keep the coolant mixture moving throughout the piping. It is traditionally operated by the timing belt and is often replaced at the same time (for most vehicles between 80-110 thousand miles). The coolant has anti-freeze, anti-corrosive and anti-boil properties that help keep the engine running at optimal temperatures. It is a liquid chemical and will eventually break down. A flush is recommended every two years/24,000 miles.

Since the piping is in constant contact with the coolant, it will eventually end up leaking/cracking and should be inspected twice annually. Radiators, control valves, heater cores and expansion tanks should be visually checked by service technicians if there is any evidence of leaking and/or plugging.

The cooling system sensors/fan that make up the temperature control portion of the cooling system are nearly impossible to maintain besides making sure you're flushing your coolant at normal intervals and keeping your engine as clean as possible.
